One of the best universities in Germany: The University of Freiburg is internationally listed as number 82 in the "Times Higher Education Ranking 2017-18" (THE-Ranking). Last year it came in number 95. The University ranks number 6 in the nation. This ranking assesses more than 1,000 universities worldwide, of which 44 alone come from Germany. It analyzes the universities' performance in the areas of teaching, research, publications, technology transfer and internationalization. In the category technology transfer, as evaluated based on the ratio between third-party revenue from the private sector and the number of researchers, the University of Freiburg achieved the best possible result in comparison to the rest of the world. In the categories "research" and "teaching", it achieved very good placements, number 94 and number 110 respectively.

"Receiving very good to excellent placements across all categories illustrates our overall strength," says Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, Rector at the University of Freiburg. "We are thrilled once again that our successes in particular in research, teaching and technology transfer have been recognized in one of the world's most important university rankings." For one, the results reflect what the University has been able to determine in other rankings. The University of Freiburg has taken sixth place in the THE ranking amongst the German universities. According to the so-called Shanghai-Ranking 2017 it has placed fourth to seventh amongst the full-range German universities. The recently leading spot in the Thomson-Reuters Innovationsranking 2017 and the „Innovation Index" in the journal Nature attest to the University's strength in innovation.

The THE Ranking relies, among other things, on a worldwide survey of more than 11,000 researchers and on the number of quotes in publications. It also takes statistical parameters such as the portion of international students or teacher-student ratios into account.
