Precise aspherical lenses from common lab tools

    09.01.2020 16:37
Scientists from the lab for micro actuators have developed a process to produce arbitrary aspherical lenses with high quality using common mechanical tools.

Using a marking laser that is commonly used to label products or components, Angelina Müller, Matthias Wapler and Ulrike Wallrabe first structured a rough cavity in a silicon substrate. Inside that cavity, they then cured an elastomer at high temperatures, which subsequently formed a precise optical surface due to volume shrinkage upon cooling. Finally, they used this surface as a mold to create high-quality polymer lenses. Using an optimization based on non-linear finite element simulations, they were able to predict the necessary shape of the initial cavity for almost any desired lens profile. Full Paper
