    Reliable implants through standardized cleaning

    The cleaning of implants is often associated with final cleaning and sterilization. It is undisputed that these two steps are important. In a study by the Freiburg researchers Patrick Kiele, Jan Hergesell, Dr. Melanie Bühler, Dr. Tim Boretius and Prof. Dr. Thomas Stieglitz and Prof. Dr. Gregg Suaning from the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney (Australia) is now showing the relevance of different cleaning steps during the entire manufacturing process chain. Cleaning steps during manufacturing can dramatically increase the adhesion of various components or functional layers, thereby increasing the longevity and reliability of implants. To date, there are no standardized methods for such cleaning. The cleaning process presented consists of several successive steps that can remove both organic and inorganic contamination from a surface. The cleaning mechanism was examined with different surface analysis methods. In this way, typical contaminations that occur during the production of active implants could be successfully removed. This study thus contributes significantly to the reliability of implants from international research and industry and thus to patient safety.
